Visa




All foreign nationals who seek to enter Ethiopia require a visa. However, Ethiopian origin ID holders and travelers who arrive in Addis Ababa Bole International Airport to take a connecting flight, provided that they do not leave the airport or pass the Immigration Desk, are not required to have a visa.

The type of visa you are required to obtain is determined mainly by the purpose of your intended travel under Ethiopia immigration law. Please make sure that you meet all requirements to receive the type of visa for which you are applying.

The Main Department for Immigration and Nationality Affairs, in collaboration with Ethiopian Airlines, has rolled out its e-visa service to all international visitors to Ethiopia since June 1, 2018. Therefore, applicants are advised to apply for their visas online, at www.evisa.gov.et 

Tourist Visa

A tourist visa is issued for visitors desiring to enter Ethiopia temporarily for tourism or a visit. Citizens of all countries in the globe are eligible for tourist visa provided that they meet all requirements to receive the visa.

The following options are available under tourist visas:

·                  Single entry visa valid for up to 30 days

·                  Single entry visa valid for 3 months

·                  Multiple entry visa valid for 3 months

·                  Multiple entry visa valid for 6 months

 

How to Apply for Tourist Visa

You can use the following options to apply for your tourist visa


Applying in Person

You can apply for a tourist visa at the Embassy in person at any time during working hours. All walk-ins are welcomed and appointments are not necessary.

Required documents

·      Current passport – the passport must be valid for at least six months;

·      One recent passport-size photograph.

·      Two-way air ticket

·      Work Permit (for Non-Senegalese) or Resident Permit

·      A completed visa application form

·      Service fees will be paid to Ethiopian Embassy in Senegal through the bank of (CBAO), Acct No. 36151042402-86.


Apply online

All international visitors to Ethiopia can apply for their tourist visas (e-Visa) online. The e-Visa is processed and issued online by the Main Department of Immigration and Nationality Affairs, where applicants can securely apply and pay for their entry visa. Visit www.evisa.gov.et for more information.

Apply on Arrival

All nationals of African countries and nationals of certain countries are eligible to apply for a visa on arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. Please check your eligibility for this service prior to making any travel arrangements.

If applying for a tourist visa on arrival, you are required to provide one recent passport-sized photograph and no less than $50 USD before your application can be processed.


Foreign nationals who are coming from countries that are not listed as tourist generating countries and, from those countries that do not have an agreement with Ethiopia regarding the issuance of visas on arrival can enter Ethiopia by obtaining a visa from a nearby Ethiopian Mission. However, if tourists from such countries wish to get a visa on arrival at the airport, they are required to get approval from the Immigration, Nationality and Vital Event Agency.

Business Visa

If you wish to travel to Ethiopia to undertake business or any work, including voluntary work, you will require a business visa approved by the office of Immigration, Nationality and Vital Event Agency. Business visa applications can be made in person at the Ethiopian Embassy in Senegal.


Except for holders of Diplomatic Passport, Official Passport, Service Passport, UN travel document, all other visa applicants should get Visa Approval from Ethiopian Immigration, Nationality and Vital Event Agency. The Host Company or sponsor in Ethiopia should request a visa approval from Ethiopian Immigration, Nationality and Vital Event Agency on behalf of the applicant.


Senegalese Diplomats or Officials travelling with Diplomatic or Official Passport must bring an official letter from the Senegal Government office.

Diplomats or Officials of other countries travelling with Diplomatic, official or service Passport or UN travel document must bring an official letter from Embassies or appropriate Authorities.

   Journalist Visa

If you are a journalist, filmmaker or professional photographer and wish to travel to Ethiopia to report on a given situation or story, you will require a journalist visa. If you are unsure if you need this kind of visa, please contact the Public Diplomacy Section. 

 Required Document

Application letter on headed paper and signed, detailing:

·         The purpose of the trip, proposed dates of travel, locations and some background information about the report or program

·        Details of the travelling journalist(s) crew (full name, passport number, nationality and    

       role)

·        Copy of passport for each person travelling

·        A kit list / carnet of all equipment being taken

·        A list of all equipment being taken into Ethiopia, including serial numbers

·        Relevant supporting documents

·        Aerial photography / filming including the use of drones

·        If you plan on taking films or photos from a plane or helicopter, permission must be sought in advance from the Civil Aviation Authority. You must state this in your application letter.
